Answers to the most commonly asked Questions
regarding celebrating the Sacrament of Matrimony at St. Boniface Church;
Who can be married in your church? At least one
person of the couple must be a practicing Catholic. Both must be free to
receive the sacrament, with no impediments, and in good standing with the
Church.
We are not parishioners. Can we be married in your
church? Yes, if the date is available and provided you have your own
priest or deacon prepare you and perform the ceremony.
How much does it cost? Our fee is $500.00 and
that includes our organist. She helps the couple choose their music, she plays
the organ, and will lead the singing. If a couple chooses to have their own
soloist or other instrumentalists, Susan may charge more if extra work is
involved. All additional fees are the responsibility of the couple.
Can we provide our own organist? No. You
may have your own pianist; however, music must be approved by our
organist.
Can we use non-liturgical music? For the liturgy
itself, only liturgical music is allowed. As a prelude or postlude, classical
pieces are permitted. Again, all music must be approved by our organist.
Why do you want us to wait six months? In order
for the couple to satisfactorily fulfill all the requirements of Canon Law
(Church Law), it takes this amount of time. Some of those requirements:
meeting with a priest or deacon, taking the FOCCUS (a series of questions that
help couples discover areas they may need to discuss before their marriage),
attending PreCana or Engaged Encounter.
Who sets the date? Our pastor, Father Robinson,
sets the date with the priest or deacon who will be performing the sacrament –
no exceptions.
Is the date guaranteed? No. That doesn’t
mean we will be giving the date to anyone else once a couple has reserved it.
IT DOES MEAN that if a couple does not fulfill all the requirements set by
Canon Law, if all the paperwork is not in, if fees are not paid, or if the
priest or deacon has reservations about the validity of the marriage, then
that wedding CANNOT take place.
When is the fee due? One week prior to the
wedding – paid in full.
What if we are not parishioners and have trouble
finding a priest or deacon to perform the wedding? Generally, this should
be your own pastor or his designee. Your pastor may be able to help you find
someone if he is unable to perform the wedding himself. St. Boniface does
not accept new parishioners on the basis that our pastor or deacon will do
your wedding.
What happens after the date is set? I will call
you and set up a time to meet with you. We will go over all the questions you
have regarding your wedding and I will explain to you what restrictions we
have and what is expected from you.
