The St. Boniface BLAZE Events, Updates and News from St. Boniface School
Volume V, Issue II April, 2008
Catholic Schools Light the Way! This was the theme for the 2008 Catholic Schools week celebration. As in past years, the week was full of activities for our students, staff, families and volunteers…everyone who contributes to our wonderful school and parish community. Kick-off began with weekend Masses on January 27th and 28th. Students and staff members handed out Thank You notes and tea lights to parishioners as they left Mass. This was meant as a small token of thanks for the tremendous support St. Boniface Parish provides to the school! Large cut-out candles were hung in the school windows with the theme prominently displayed across the front windows of the school. Other activities included: Family Breakfast, Movie Day (complete with popcorn), Red & White Spirit Day, Faculty Appreciation Luncheon (supplied by FTO), Catholic Schools Week Liturgy at the Cathedral attended by the Seventh Grade Leadership Scholars, staff and volunteer chaperones, the ever-popular Cake Walk, phone calls to parish shut-ins, and students taking on the roles of teachers and staff members for a day. The week ended with a prayer service, planned and led by Miss Luken and the Eighth Grade students. Family members were invited to attend and then stay for a tour of the building, highlighting all the improvements of last summer.

Congratulations! Let’s stay focused for the 4th Quarter and finish strongly!
Student Name Tags Each student receives a name tag which they wear, as part of their uniform, every day at school. The name tags are to remain at school and SHOULD NOT be taken home. If your child inadvertently takes their name tag home, we ask that you make sure that they bring it with them on the following day. A lost or purposely destroyed name tag will be replaced at your expense. Broken name tags should be turned in to the school office for repair. We thank you for your help!
Reaching out to others in service
Lent was kicked off in style…New Orleans style…as Miss Luken and the Eighth Graders organized the second annual Mardi Gras celebration. Students purchased tickets to play games and buy treats. It was quite the festivity with the students parading around in their Mardi Gras masks, which they had made themselves, in Art class. $500.00 was raised for Hurricane Katrina Relief!
Students participated in a Mathathon during the week of February 11th to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Twenty one participants raised $1630.00 by getting sponsors to pledge a monetary donation for each math problem done during that week. What a tremendous response! Our top three fundraisers were:
Gunner Halvorsen Grade 8 Michael Solomon Grade 7 Isabella Mercer Grade 2
Congratulations on a job well done and math problems well solved!
With LENT came…the annual St. Boniface Fish Frys! Thanks to all who worked and sent in desserts for the weekly Fish Frys. Other than the weekend of the Blizzard, they were well attended and a great success. Over $4000.00 was raised for direct tuition assistance! We appreciate your support of these fundraising events!
THE FAMILY TEACHER ORGANIZATION (FTO) St. Boniface School is blessed to have actively involved families! FTO is busy, as usual. During Catholic Schools Week, a fabulous luncheon was provided for faculty and staff. It was enjoyed and greatly appreciated by all! Following the Fine Arts Program, FTO will serve refreshments for family and friends attending the show. Ongoing fundraisers include the collection of Campbell’s labels and Boxtops for Education. Keep on clipping!
We can NOT do it without your help! Thank you FTO and all our VOLUNTEERS!
***Special Note*** HELP WANTED This year will be Lorri Finke’s last year as FTO Chair as her youngest son, Aaron, will be in eighth grade next year. She would like to assist someone next year with FTO duties. She will be happy to help with transition for anyone who would be willing to take on this position of leadership. Lorri has laid a wonderful foundation and has notes and guidelines for FTO sponsored events and activities. We hope you will prayerfully consider this position of service to our school community. If interested, contact Lorri @ 681-6597 or the school office.
The Fine Arts Show… featuring a sampler of vocal music selections, performed by the entire student body, will take place on Thursday, May 1st at 7:00PM. In addition, family and friends are invited to view the student artwork displayed throughout the school. Many thanks to our young performers and artists, along with Mr. Neil Stewart and Mrs. Debbie Kampel.
Be sure to stop by the cafeteria after the show. Refreshments will be provided by FTO.
What’s the BUZZZZ? This year, Eric DeLeon won our school Spelling Bee and represented St. Boniface at the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee held at the Duke Energy Center. “Bee” sure to congratulate Eric on his performance!
(Pi) DAY…was celebrated in Math classes and at Math Club on March 14th (3.14). A pi Bee was held and participants tried to memorize as many digits as possible in the value of pi. Winners were: Grade 7 Armond Harris-59, followed by Alexis Avery-51 Grade 8 Mary Wright-50 and
OVERALL WINNER Sarai Ward-75!
Now, that’s impressive!
Did you know??? Some background information on pi: Pi or π is one of the most important mathematical constants, approximately equal to 3.14159. It represents the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter in Euclidean geometry. Many formulas from mathematics, science, and engineering involve π. It is an irrational number, which means that it cannot be expressed as a fraction. Consequently its decimal representation never ends or repeats.
FACES IN THE CROWD We have been blessed all year to have students from LaSalle High School Religion Classes here several days a week to perform service. They assist in the classrooms and work with the students, do chores for Sister Ann and offer help wherever needed. We thank these young men for their service to our school! GO LANCERS!
