ST. BONIFACE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

MINUTES – SEPTEMBER 14, 2009

The meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m.  For Faith Formation, Father Joe conducted the Rite of Initiation and Recommitment for the new and incumbent Council members.

Roll call was taken.  Members Present:  Father Joe, Tim Banish, Lisa Beidenbach, Dave Bracken, Kathie Fahey, Jeanne Guenthner, Beth Kessler, Jim Kuhn, Tom LeSaint, Rick Salerno, Ruthann Sammarco, Rosemary Welz.  Carol Roosa was also present.

The minutes of the May 28 meeting were approved as published.

New Business:

Election of Chair and Vice-Chair  --  Rick Salerno was elected Parish Pastoral Council Chair and Ted Boliske was elected Vice-Chair for the 2009-2010 term.

Number of Council Members  --  Dave Bracken inquired regarding the possibility of reducing the number of Parish Pastoral Council members since it is sometimes difficult to get people to run for these positions.  Some members felt that, if the number was reduced, it would be difficult to have a vote if members were absent.  After a brief discussion, it was decided to leave the number of Council members as it currently stands.

Collection for CAIN  --  Dave Bracken asked if it would be possible to have a special collection for CAIN several times a year.  Father Joe replied that he felt it was not necessary since the parish and our St. Vincent de Paul Society contribute a total of $700.00 to CAIN each month.

Old Business

Young Adult Ministry  --  Carol Roosa reported that Theology on Tap would be held on the four Wednesdays in October at Martino’s on Vine in Clifton for young adults from St. Boniface and St. Monica/St. George Parishes.  Letters are being sent to the young adults in our parish.  Young adult focus groups met in early June and contributed many ideas.  Pastoral Staff and Council came up with three goals based on responses:  (1) Have a bi-monthly (or monthly, if preferred) gathering of young adults for socializing and fellowship.  (2) Have a contemporary Mass during Lent or in the spring that is completely set up by young adults (including the music).  (3) Have part of the St. Boniface website dedicated solely to young adults.

For the Good of the Parish

Father Joe and Council members reported on the following:

·      There are currently 180 students enrolled in St. Boniface School.  A dishwasher has been purchased for the cafeteria but there are some problems with installation.  There have been many problems with the yellow buses getting the students to school on time.

·      Deacon Jerry Yetter will preach at the Masses the weekend of October 3-4.

·      Rosaries are being collected and will be available to parishioners during October, the month of the Holy Rosary

·      November 1, the Feast of All Saints, falls on Sunday this year, so it is not an additional Holy Day of Obligation.

·      Forty Hours devotion will be December 11-13.  It will begin with Mass on Friday morning and the closing will follow the 12:00 noon Mass on Sunday.  There will be lunch in the school cafeteria following the closing ceremony.

·      Also on December 13, the Vocal Arts Ensemble will perform at 5:30 p.m. in church.

·      Father Joe brought up the suggestion of changing the Saturday Mass time to 3:30 p.m. from November 7 until March 14 so that it would still be daylight when people left Mass.  This had appeared in the bulletin and Father said he had received feedback from about an equal number of people who wanted the time changed and who wanted it left the same.  Several Council members stated that, due to their weekend work schedules, they would not be able to attend Mass at St. Boniface if the time were changed to 3:30 p.m.  After discussion it was decided to leave the Saturday Mass time at 4:00 p.m.

·      A financial report was distributed.  At the end of August the parish was about $9,000.00 ahead.  Father Joe is preparing a letter for parishioners regarding their donations so far this year and will probably give a talk on stewardship in October or November.

·      The video camera has been purchased.  Al Murnan will work on installing it and Al will also be working on correcting the raised portion of the floor in front of the pews.

·      The Fall Festival will be Sunday, November 22, from 1:00-6:00 p.m.  Turkey and roast beef dinners will be served.

·      At their last meeting, the Spiritual Book Club discussed the book, My Life with the Saints.  They will discuss Care for Creation at their next meeting.

·      Ed and Judy Gettler, Jenni Lindgren and Tim Banish will graduate from the Lay Pastoral Ministry Program at the Atheneum on October 18.  Ed Gettler conducted a program on the meaning of the Mass.  Judy conducted a Morning of Recollection for older adults.  Jenni conducted the Young Adult Focus Groups.  Tim is working on the home visitation program for our St. Vincent de Paul Society and CAIN.

·      There will be a convocation of priests in Ohio in November on the topic of marriage.

·      Currently there is only one person in the RCIA program, but the people who went through the program last year are interested in attending again.

·      Mary Ellen Yetter is working on forming a bereavement group.  The liturgy to remember parishioners who died during the past year will be October 25 at 4:00 p.m.  There will not be a Mass at that time.

·      The count of all people attending Mass will be taken at all of the weekend Masses in October.

·      Because of the parish financial situation, it was necessary to cut one of the maintenance positions.

·      Father Joe spoke about the pastoral region composed of St. Joseph, St. Leo, Mother of Christ, St. Antonio and St. Bernard Parishes.  Father Jim Schutte is working with St. Leo and St.Bernard Parishes and Father Shappelle is working with Mother of Christ.

Because of Thanksgiving, the next meeting will be Monday, November 23.  The meeting was closed at 8:30 p.m. with prayer by Father Joe.

                                                                        Respectfully submitted,

                                                                        Rosemary Welz, Secretary
