ST. BONIFACE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES
May 23, 2006
The meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m. with prayer by Father Joe. For faith formation, Father read the gospel for the following Sunday, the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, and asked Council members to share their thoughts. Council members felt that the Ascension was the visible sign that Jesus’ earthly ministry was completed and that He was giving the task of evangelization to us.
Roll call was taken. Members Present: Father Joe, Tim Banish, Lisa Biedenbach, Joe Dempsey, Kathie Fahey, Jerry Finke, Mike Grause, Jeanne Guenthner, Tom LeSaint, Doug Mercer, Amy Robinson, Jill Rowinski, Rosemary Welz, Henry Wesseler
The minutes of the March 28 meeting were approved as published.
Father Joe welcomed newly elected members, Mike Grause and Henry Wesseler and also welcomed Jill Rowinski who was appointed to fill John Twombly’s unexpired term. Father thanked out-going members, Joe Dempsey, Kathie Fahey, Jerry Finke and Doug Mercer for their service on Council. The new Council members will be officially installed at the September meeting and the chairperson for the 2006-2007 term will be elected at that time. Father also thanked Tom LeSaint and the nominating committee for their work. Tom LeSaint thanked everyone who helped with the election. Only one complaint was received – that the names on the ballots were not in alphabetical order. This is done deliberately so that the first people listed on the ballot do not automatically receive the highest number of votes.
Old Business:
Future of the Parish -- Tim Banish reported that he sent the brochure about the Northside churches to Mimi Chamberlain at CAIN but has not received a reply as yet. CAIN will distribute these brochures to their clients. Tim also shared two fliers that had been left on his door promoting area churches and asked if this might be a possibility for St. Boniface to use to increase attendance. Father Joe replied that, several years ago, the Northside churches had participated in the Jesus Video Project, but that it had not appreciably increased membership or attendance.
Youth Activities -- Father Joe reported that the bulletin survey regarding youth activities had received only three responses. Those responding were interested in a teen group, movie nights and dances. Lisa Biedenbach distributed some resource material she had prepared on youth ministry. Lisa stated that youth ministry is a challenging endeavor and that we should work with the archdiocese rather that trying to attempt it on our own. Tim Banish reported that the Northside Presbyterian Church’s youth group attendance varies between 25-50 per meeting and that their main problem is staffing. Lisa Biedenbach suggested that a task force be formed to study youth ministry at St. Boniface. Jerry Finke and Amy Robinson offered to help. Missy Craig and Mary Craig who attempted to form a youth group several years ago will also be contacted.
Oktoberfest -- Tim Banish reported that two radio stations will provide free advertising and both will be on-site for a portion of the event. Tim plans to have a planning meeting in mid-June.
For the Good of the Parish:
Father Joe and Council members reported the following.
· There are currently 140 students enrolled in St. Boniface School. There are 160 students already registered for next year and 42 prospects. We have 31 voucher students coming from Mt. Airy, Schwab, Pleasant Hill and Carson Schools. We have to increase personnel to help with the increased enrollment. There will be an aide in first and second grade and Sister Ann will have some help with administration.
· Eighth grade graduation is Wednesday, May 31, at 7:00 p.m. Fifteen students are graduating.
· The Lenten and Easter services went well. The Holy Saturday liturgy went extremely well and was especially beautiful. Five people were received into the Church.
· Confirmation, First Communion and May Crowning also went well.
· A financial statement was distributed. The parish is currently $3.000 in the black; however, the $17,000 assessment is due to be paid next month.
· Father has received several favorable comments about the new lights.
· The parish met our goal for the Archbishop’s Annual Fund Drive. Our parish goal was $13,000 and our total amount collected and pledged was $16,154. Father thanked everyone for their support.
· Father received some feedback on the letter he sent out about the deaconate program. Tim Banish, Ed Gettler and Doug Mercer showed some interest.
· The lady who wanted to sell the building at the corner of Chase and Gordon Street contacted Father. She has found some tenants for the building and they do not need our parking lot.
The next meeting will be September 26. The meeting was closed with prayer at 8:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Rosemary L. Welz, Secretary
