ST. BONIFACE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL
MINUTES – March 28, 2006
The meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m. with prayer by Father Joe. Father read two items for meditation. One was a selection from the Gospel in which Jesus was contemplating His passion and death, but telling His Father that the Father’s will be done. The second selection described how, if a town was composed of only 100 people, the population would be divided as to race, education, religion and wealth.
Roll call was taken. Members Present: Father Joe, Tim Banish, Lisa Biedenbach Dave Bracken, Missy Craig, Kathie Fahey, Jerry Finke, Beth Kessler, Tom LeSaint, Doug Mercer, Ruthann Sammarco, Mary Ann Thaler, Rosemary Welz. Carol Roosa and parishioners Lou Ruman and Henry Wesseler were also present.
Carol Roosa reported that John Twombly is working in Florida much of the time making it difficult for him to attend Council meetings. John is submitting his resignation if Council feels it is appropriate. Lisa Biedenbach moved that Council accept John’s resignation. Dave Bracken seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved. Carol Roosa will contact the person who received the next highest votes regarding filling the vacant position.
The minutes of the January 24 meeting were approved as published.
Old Business:
Council Elections -- Tom LeSaint reported that the nominating committee has five candidates to run for the three open Council positions. Mary Ann Thaler suggested an additional candidate. Biographical sketches along with pictures of the candidates will be in the bulletin prior to the election. Tim Banish will take the photographs. The election will be held the weekend of May 13-14.
Future of the Parish -- Tim Banish has been working with CAIN to promote the Northside churches. Tim distributed a brochure that he developed that lists all of the churches in Northside. The brochure has been presented to CAIN for approval. CAIN will print the brochure and distribute approximately 200 copies per month. Lisa Biedenbach suggested that perhaps a local realtor or a Northside business would pay for the printing cost. Tim will discuss this with Mimi Chamberlain at CAIN.
New Business:
Youth Activities -- Tom LeSaint reported that two parishioners had contacted him regarding the possibility of having a teen dance once a month at St. Boniface in an effort to bring teenagers back to the parish. The two people who made the suggestion are willing to help with and chaperone the dances. Missy Craig mentioned that several years ago an attempt to form a youth group in the parish had not been successful. Discussion was held regarding other possible activities, such as volleyball night, movie night or a block party. Missy will prepare a survey to be included in the bulletin asking teenagers if they are interested and what type of activities they would prefer.
Oktoberfest -- Tim Banish reported that he attended the archdiocesan festival meeting and got a few ideas that might be helpful to us. Radio station MOJO 94.9 will advertise the Oktoberfest and be present some time during the event. Lisa Biedenbach mentioned that Fred Lemke is willing do publicity in print and on line. Tim will start having planning meetings in June.
For the Good of the Parish:
Father Joe and Council members reported the following.
· There are currently 140 students enrolled in St. Boniface School. There are 85 students registered for the 2006-07 school year. St. Boniface School will be accepting state vouchers next year. The vouchers are given to students who are currently attending public schools that have been in “academic emergency” for the last three years.
· The Lenten services are going well and there is an increase in attendance. Father stressed that Holy Week is the most important week of the year and encouraged everyone to attend as many of the Holy Week services as possible. This year the Easter Vigil service will begin at 8:45 p.m.
· Confirmation will be on Sunday, April 30, at the noon Mass. Father Joe will be officiating. Nine members of St. Boniface Parish and 15 members of Sacred Heart Parish will be confirmed.
· First Communion will be Saturday, May 6, at the 4:00 p.m. Mass.
· A financial statement was distributed. Carol Roosa reported that the parish is currently $2,278 in the red. However, the property taxes on the rectory were reassessed and we received a considerable reduction as well as a check for past over-payments. The parish has been giving the school $30,000 to help with utilities. The school has currently exceeded this amount for this year. Carol will propose to the Finance Committee that any money that the parish has left over at the end of the fiscal year be given to the school. Father Joe commented that there are five Sundays in April, including Easter, and he feels that this will help take care of the current parish deficit.
· The new lights are scheduled to arrive on March 29. Weather permitting, they may be installed and working by Easter.
· To date, the parish has met $11,245 of our $13,000 goal for the Archdiocesan Annual Fund Drive.
· Seven people in the RCIA program will be received into the church on Holy Saturday.
· The last two musical events at St. Boniface were well attended. Approximately 185 people attended the concert on March 26.
· Tim Banish expressed concern that the kitchen utensils in the school are not available to the volunteers for the festival, bingo and fish fries; for example, there were no towels available for the bingo last week. Carol Roosa explained that the school cafeteria and the parish events have separate supplies and apologized for not having the towels ready for the bingo.
The next meeting will be May 23. The meeting was closed with prayer at 8:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Rosemary L. Welz, Secretary
