ST. BONIFACE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES

JANUARY 23, 2007

The meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m. For Faith Formation Father Joe read the Gospel that told about when Jesus went to Nazareth and read the scripture in the synagogue there and how His relatives and friends reacted to His statements. Council members expressed thoughts about the loneliness Jesus must have felt at times and also that our hearts are sometimes restless in this life because we are made for eternal life in heaven.

Roll call was taken. Members Present: Father Joe, Tim Banish, Dave Bracken, Missy Craig, Jeanne Guenthner, Beth Kessler, Tom LeSaint, Jill Rowinski, Amy Robinson, Ruthann Sammarco, Mary Ann Thaler, Rosemary Welz, Henry Wesseler.

The minutes of the November 28 meeting were approved as published.

Old Business:

Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) -- Discussion was held regarding whether or not to purchase an AED for the church. If one were purchased, there would have to be someone at each Mass who was trained in using it. Father Joe commented that if one is purchased and we fail to use it in the event of a cardiac emergency, we could be libel. After further discussion, Dave Bracken moved that we do not purchase an AED for the church. Amy Robinson seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

Oktoberfest/Thanksgiving Festival -- Tim Banish reported that he had canceled the band that had been booked for next year’s Oktoberfest. Time also questioned the notice that appeared in the bulletin asking for Christmas items to be donated for a booth at the fall festival, since no firm decision had been made regarding a future festival. Tim also added that, due to his participation in the Lay Pastoral Ministry Program, he will be unable to chair a fall festival. After discussion, it was decided that a meeting be held in the near future to discuss festival plans.

New Business:

Parish Pastoral Council Elections -- Dave Bracken, Missy Craig, Tom LeSaint and Mary Ann Thaler volunteered to serve on the nominating committee. Tim Banish, Jeanne Guenthner, Jill Rowinksi and Ruthann Sammarco indicated that they would be willing to run for reelection. Council elections will be held in May.

Bingo Profits -- Jeanne Guenthner inquired about how much money the bingo had been able to give to the school. Father Joe replied that he would have Carol Roosa prepare a financial statement for bingo for Council.

For the Good of the Parish:

Father Joe and Council members reported the following.

 There are currently about 170 students enrolled in St. Boniface School. The new students are still adjusting but seem to be doing better. Catholic Schools Week is January 28-February 3. Rosemary Welz gave a brief outline of the activities St. Boniface School has planned for the week and encouraged Council members to participate in the school penny drive for the Make A Wish Foundation and to volunteer to be “Special Persons” at lunch on Thursday, February 1.
 The stone has been ordered to repair the front of the school. We are waiting for it to be delivered.
 Work on the school cafeteria floor will be done the week after Easter when the children are not in school. There will be no bingo for two weeks – Holy Thursday and the week after Easter.
 Father felt that the Christmas Masses went well and commented on how beautifully the church had been decorated.
 Deacon Jerry Yetter will be preaching at the Masses on February 10 and 11.
 The Four Chaplains Mass will be at 12:00 noon on February 11. Father Bruce Clapham, chaplain at Veterans’ Hospital, will be the celebrant.
 Ash Wednesday is February 21. There will be an evening service on all the Wednesdays during Lent, mostly Mass except for Evening Prayer on March 14 and a Penance Service on March 28.
 It has not been decided as yet whether will have Fish Fries during Lent.
 Easter is April 8. The Easter Vigil Service will begin at 8:45 p.m.
 We had a good Christmas collection. A lot of bills came in January, but we are currently over $60,000 to the good. Carol Roosa will give a complete report at the March meeting.
 This year our parish goal for the Annual Archdiocesan Fund Drive is $15,000, which is $2,000 over last year. Father feels that we will be able to make this goal since we collected over $15,000 last year.
 Father hasn’t forgotten about the memorial pavers, but had to put it aside due to other things that required attention.
 There are currently six people in the RCIA program.
 Carol Roosa is continuing to take classes at the Athenaeum. She is taking a course in preaching and will be preaching on Friday at Holy Hour and on Holy Saturday at Morning Prayer.
 The Organ Fund is doing well.

The next meeting will be March 27. The meeting was closed with prayer at 8:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Rosemary L. Welz, Secretary
